Marusya Bohuslavka from Diaspora
Length: 5.24
The theme of this song is based on the 16th C Duma (poem) about a character called Marusya Bohuslavke - literally, Maria from the Glory of God'. Maria, a Priests daughter, is the wife of a Turkish Pasha (lord) who has imprisoned a group of cossacks. Maria 'gives them the keys to their freedom' - a story that can be interpreted on two levels.
Marusya Bohuslavka (Marusya Bohuslavka)
The slave-girl Marusya Bohuslavka came to us and spoke to us these words:
“Poor Cossack captives, do you know what day it is?”
The captives then replied:
“Why should we know what day it is?”
Marusya told the captives:
“Today is Easter Saturday, tomorrow is our Easter Day!”
And so, on the holy Sunday she came with the key
And taking great care, she opened the prison
Setting the captive Cossacks free with the words:
“Go out into the big, wide world!
I come to you to open the prison
so that all you poor captives can be free.”
Marusya Bohuslavka is not dead, she is still alive today;
Marusya Bohuslavka is with us each and every day.
God grant Christian nations the wisdom they need forever.
God give Islamic nations peace until the end of time
(Based on the words of the 16thC Duma ' Marusya Bohuslavka')
